We take our name from the poet Esteban Urkiaga, whose pseudonym was Lauaxeta. The centre was founded in 1977, and in the first ten years the number of students increased from an initial 150 to 1,450 and the number of teachers from 9 to 75.
This was followed by a particularly important period, 1988-1993. At this centre we work in two major areas – educational innovation and continuous management innovation, considering them two sides of the same coin: one cannot exist without the other.
This reflection led us to the stage of the Strategic Plans for 1996-2000, 2000-2004 and 2004-2008, during which time we focused on the values, the need to prepare our students for lifelong learning, and innovation for our infrastructures.
In line with this, our Management Team trained in excellence management according to the EFQM model, to innovate in management and consequently manage innovation at the ikastola school.
We designed a process management system, and our work won us several awards: the Silver Q in 2001 (over 400 points on the EFQM model scale); the Quality Award from the Ministry of Education and Science, which we won twice, in 2001 and 2002; the Gold Q in 2003 (over 500 points); European Award finalist in 2004 and 2006; rated one of the best education centres in Spain by the newspaper El Mundo; and Prize Winner for Management by Processes & Facts and EFQM Excellence Award Winner in 2007.
In our Strategic Plans for 2004-2008 and 2008-2012 we decided to focus on our Social Responsibility and Innovation Management.
The 2012-16 and 2016-20 Strategic Plans addressed innovation in educational projects, guaranteeing the necessary learning resources to improve the students’ skills and correctly aligning the education processes to achieve these goals.
The 2016-20 Strategic Plan included the Agenda 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as criteria for quality management.
The objective of the 2020-24 Strategic Plan is to continue improving the educational project and to update the resources for education, leisure and sport. Other actions include the launch of the Lauaxeta Campus project. As well as enabling us to update the ikastola’s different resources and spaces, this project will also provide new leisure and sport services for the students, professionals, families and former students making up the Lauaxeta community.
From our creation to the present moment, one thing has always remained: our commitment to innovation. We consider it a priority to meet society’s needs, adapting and orienting both our educational project and our management.
