The ultimate goal of learning a language is communication, so it is important for the students to use their language in real life situations.
There are several exchange experiences with students from other countries available to the students throughout the school year: Bruges, La Rochelle, Denmark or Berlin, among others.
They can also take advantage of the opportunities offered by the new technologies and have exchange experiences via Skype, becoming immersed in the lifestyle, culture and knowledge of students from other countries.

This programme is run in the fourth year of post-secondary and the students take part in an exchange with students from a centre in Bruges. Given the age of these students, for some of them this is their first experience of this type abroad, and it is an ideal way to observe and experience another culture and customs.
This programme is run in the first year of post-secondary and forms part of the students’ French studies. For two weeks, they join an exchange programme with a centre from this French city with a view to improving their proficiency in a language they have already started learning at the ikastola.
However, this is more than just a language-learning experience for the students, as it also gives them the interesting experience of observing first-hand how the customs of families and young people of their own age are different in this neighbouring country.
This is a programme for first-year Post-secondary students, and it is run as part of the German classes. The students improve their level of German and experience not only the language but also the German lifestyle and culture.
The exchange is with a local school and lasts two weeks: our students visit Berlin for one week and the German students come to Lauaxeta for one week.
This is an English programme for students in the second year of Post-secondary. The Lauaxeta students take part in this exchange with students from the city of Billund, and the aim is not only for them to improve their level of English but also to get first-hand knowledge of the lifestyle, customs and culture of this Northern European country.
Students interested in a long stay abroad are seeking a significant life experience, and this is what the students who have been on these longer stays tell us: it’s a major life experience.
Lauaxeta Ikastola runs different study exchange programmes in collaboration with EAS Vele, STEP and Aston Herencia.
The stays usually last a full term or a full school year, and they can be in either European or non-European countries.
Information on these programmes abroad is given to the families in October or November each year.
A stay in Ireland or the UK is an excellent option for discovering what it’s like to live abroad for some time and is ideal for students who want to learn to get by in a foreign language in real-life situations, or are looking to discover another culture and lifestyle but don’t want to go too far from home.
Ireland has very flexible study programmes, so students choosing this country will have to decide on the curriculum and a choice of subjects in accordance with the type of studies they wish to follow.
The UK offers a wide array of study possibilities, and different types of education centre are also available.
A stay in either of these two countries can extend to a full assessment cycle.
Students wishing to study and have a life experience outside Europe can do so for a whole assessment cycle or school year.
In this case, the experience affects the organisation and validation of the subjects studied and the decision must therefore be made jointly with the Ikastola.
Going to the United States tends to be a very interesting option, as there are many different formulas to choose from.
Canada is also a very appealing country and its education system is of an appropriate level, so it makes for a very interesting learning experience.
As to New Zealand, this is a country that welcomes many foreign students. As a result, the centres are very well-prepared and run suitable programmes for these students.
Students wishing to undertake stays abroad in the summer season can go to the UK or the USA.
There are different options regarding the length of these stays: they can be a 2, 3 or 4-week experience, and most of them are held in July.
As well as greatly improving their proficiency in English or in another language, the students who participate in this scheme can also get to know the lifestyle of a different country without it affecting the progress of their studies over the school year.
